A Bit About Me and My Love of Community Service

I have always loved to help other people in any way possible. When I was younger it was mostly my family, helping my Nana bake, cleaning the house for Mom while she was working, and odds and ends for anyone who asked. My community service really began in high school during my two years of honor society. I did over 40 hours with numerous different places in my home town. My favorite service was when I helped with senior meals, cooking, packing the meals to go, serving those who came in, and being able to chat with the people while they ate. When I came to college, for our Freshman requirements we had to have 60 hours of community service, I decided to do mine with an adult home because elderly people are my passion. My sophomore year I discovered Circle K and all the great community service projects that they do throughout the year. With Circle K I have racked up over 100 hours of service and all while I was having fun. I loved Circle K and all the wonderful services they did for people so I became a dues paid member and a co-committee chair of K-Family ( I'll explain what that is later when I really talk about Circle K). And for this year and my upcoming year, I have decided to take on many roles within Circle K which include being the Bethany Village Chair, Co-Chair for K-Family, and the Fundraising chair. Community service to me is not just about giving back, but about the smiles you receive, the friends you gain, and the fun you have.

What is community service anyway?

Community Service is an activity that a person or group volunteers their time and self to accomplish out of the goodness of their heart. Some people do it because they want to and some do it because they have to, but it all can be fun and rewarding.

Myths and Facts about Community Service

Myth:
Only people who have broken the law in some way do community service.
Fact:
Yes, those who do brake the law are given community service to make up for that which they have done wrong, but not all community service is "given" or "forced" upon people. Some people in the world enjoy doing community service for fun and to help those in need.

Myth:
Community Service is being forced to do work that a person would not want to do otherwise.
Fact:
No one forces anyone to do what they don't want to, you do community service projects that you enjoy to and because you like to see the effects which are almost always positive ones.

Myth:
I can never have fun doing community service activities, doing things that I don't get paid for.
Fact:
There are lots of projects that can be fun and benefit you as a person in a different way other than money. (Continue to follow for my detailed accounts of community service that is fun.)

Myth:
Community Service helps me in no way
Fact:
Community Service is a great way to build a network for yourself, gaining contacts that may help you later in life or even just friends that you can have lunch with on a Friday here and there.

Myth:
Say you have to do a certain amount of hours for either school or a club: Who keeps track of my hours, I could just lie on my sheet.
Fact:
This is a very false statement or thought. Those who are required to have a certain amount of hours of community service always have someone besides themselves that is paying attention and recording the hours that they put in.
